South Hero and the Champlain Islands: South Hero is situated on a large island in the middle of the northern part of Lake Champlain with the Green Mountains of Vermont to its east and the Adirondack Mountains of New York to the west. It is approximately 75 miles south of Montreal, 20 miles northwest of Burlington, VT and 1 mile via year-round ferry to the Plattsburgh region of New York State.

South Hero is a small agricultural town with a population of 1,696 people (2000 census). Tourism and farming are it's main economic basis. Dairy farms and orchards predominate. Vermont's first grape vineyard is located in South Hero.

Transportation:
By Car - US 2 connects the islands to Vermont from the east, and Rt. 314 links the islands via the Lake Champlain Cumberland Head Ferry to New York state and the Adirondack Northway at Plattsburgh. The ferry runs year round. Montreal is an easy 2 hour drive to the north.
By Plane: The Burlington International Airport is a 25 minute drive to the south. It is served by US Airways, United, Delta, American Airlines, Northwest, Continential and JetBlue. Car rentals are available at the airport. The Plattsburgh Airport is about a 40 minute drive via ferry.

Climate - Lake Champlain has a significant impact on the temperature in the islands. Slow to warm in the spring, lake breezes on hot summer days and slow to cool in the fall, it is an ideal environment for orchards, vineyards and people.
